Banksy Sellout

Did he sell out?
Banksy is one of the coolest Vandals on earth, at least he made us believe that for years. He had some of the coolest quotes, for example
Copyright is for losers.
But what happend now? In the last months his movie hit festival after festival and is touring the big cities in England and the US, his works sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and what does he do? He is on a mission to change his vandalismn into a commercial stunt for his movie. Or are we all mistaken? Might it be some bigger plan? From my point of view, you can't sell out as an artist if you keep on doing what you have always been doing. The biggest problem of Banksy is, that he is famous, that he makes more money than others, and that ruins his street cred. The fact that he uses every possible way to mock the commercial side of the art world should show us, that his way of the art, is a way of showing it everyone. He has not respect, neither for fellow artists, nor for propery, which should not be considered a coincidence, he is a street artist. I will always have a place in my heart for Banksy, and I urge you to reserve a spot for him as well. He will be the street artist that history will remember, no matter if you think he is good or bad, he will be one of those guys to enter the school books, very few will be able to do that.
Here are a few pieces that I like, even though you might call them commercial, sellout, or they have been made to money by other people who do not care about art at all.

There have been several Banksy stolen from the streets, or can you say removed? The guys who removed them were probably the owners of the places where the vandalism took place. It's a strange world once walls are removed because a piece of art is painted on them. A strange, but very beautiful world.
Before his movie hits a city Banksy is usually on a vandalism spree, which produces artworks that you could call commercial billboards. Saving a few marketing and advertising fees I guess.
And one of his last adventures has been a war with an oldschool Graffiti crew, where he painted over a few Graffitis that dated back to the 80's, which in all respect, might be called bad mannered. But after all, Graffiti is about breaking the rules and vandalismn, not about Gang fights.

In all fairness I can see were your coming from. But have you actually sat down and watched Exit through the gift shop? If so, I don't see how you are still thinking he is a sell out, the documentry itself made me and a group of my friends who had long forgotten the ways of graffiti get back into the game. He puts points across that no one else in this world would dare to, and he gets the message across.
